Whale Doodle

 If I was still putting Tatties on my baby I would call this a Whale Tattie. But that child is now almost 14 and when tatters make small items to use up extra thread left on shuttles it's also called a doodle. In 2017 I was clearing blue off a shuttle to make some roses. I scribbled the pattern notation on my scrap papers and posted the day's work to Instagram and then it was forgotten about until I got an email asking about the whale and I decided it was time to correctly notate the pattern. I have included it here for you. The original doodle I accidentally cut the large water spout picot when I was cutting off the ends. When revisiting it I cut it again because I thought I did it on purpose, and then remembered the error with my notes. I have just completed the TIAS for the year with Jane Eborall and she used twisted picots and while tatting the doodle from notes to check pattern I thought it would be nice with a slightly twisted picot. But it was late and I needed to get to bed so I posted the doodles and went to bed. Great minds think alike because this morning I awoke to a comment on the picture that suggested a twisted picot. So I added the option to the instructions because it is a great variation. If you tat a whale please give me a shout out. I would love to see yours.

Happy 4th Birthday to Tatties! (a birthday giveaway)

Oh goodness me! Four years have I been leaving little 1 inch thread snippings all over the house to vacuum later as I have created butterflies, animals and flowers. All in the name of lace and pretty things.

An artist by heart and education, a mother by choice, has left me to find an outlet that I could easily pick up and set down without much mess and danger to the children. My sister taught me tatting and I happened to use it one day on my newborn instead of a ribbon bow and fell in love.

Tatties are low profile, and adhere to the scalp with a water soluble agent, some favorites:
ky gelly / surgical jely
karo syrup
honey
glue stick
white glue

They can stay on for days, and easily wash off with water and are totally reusable.  Much less cumbersome than the headbands that always made my baby angry. :)

 I also finally got my exchange tatted up and sent off. I got the loot on the top and sent off the stuff on the bottom. I love exchanges, it always comes with good ideas, beautiful work and often presents. :)

TIAS

Here is a catch up post of the last three days of the TIAS over at Jane's Tat it and See game.

I had a busy week/ weekend and did all my catch up last night. Now, to patiently wait for day 10.
I'm guessing it is a baby pram or bassinet for the wee baby royal due this year. If it is I will probably add it to a onesie for one of my pending baby nieces.

Here is Day 6 of the TIAS.
Can I just say how much I love this HDT? It is so pretty. I love the transitions. It's so natural and smooth. Green Gal from Australia gifted me with it during one of our tatting exchanges. I want more. :)


And I finally stopped oogling at my Mary Konior book Tatting with Visual Patterns and set to work on her pattern Anniversary to make a bookmark.  I love it. I'm making a second. :)
 

Watermelon and TIAS 2013 Days 2-5

This year's TIAS has been an opportunity to learn some new techniques that I didn't even know existed. One in particular, the Catherine Wheel join I think will be just the thing I need to try on my Tattie watermelon slice pattern. Here is one of my early attempts at its design. I have yet to try the CWJ on it though. As is, it was recognizable so I figure I am on the right path. :)

TIAS 2013 day 1

This year with Rita finished and day1 of the TIAS already posted and my shuttles still full of Greengal's size 20 HDT I decided to go ahead and get going with this lovely varied pink thread.

Here's to an uninterrupted TIAS this year. :)

TIAS 2012 UFO

Last year I started Jane's TIAS (http://tatitandsee.blogspot.com/?m=1) and got stuck on about day seven. This was in part due to the SCMR, but as I have not had issues with them in the past I think it has more to do with my worry over my youngest son's health as he had just been diagnosed with cancer. By the time he was operated on and the remaining kidney and its softball sized tumor was removed the game had closed and I'd set aside my UFO (unfinished object) to put our lives back together. After a few months we received the final diagnosis that the polycysticlocularnefroma was totally benign. God has blessed us profusely and as the past year has wound to a close I cannot express my love for God's mercy and the joy I have had in being able to continue to raise this little boy and have been able to avoid all the extra fuss actually having cancer would have brought into our lives. As it was, it was quite enough for me to handle. Prayers are answered, miracles happen.

So as we come around to January again and I am excited to start this year's TIAS it was time to pull out he UFO and finish it. I watched a few videos on youTube on self closing mock rings and then got it on my first go around. I enjoyed tatting up the rest of the pattern to completion and am happy to present to you, Rita the Pink Goat. Since it has a horn it should probably be male huh? Oh well.

Ceramic Shuttle

I am so ridiculously excited about this.

It's been a long time in process. I didn't have much hope when I started it but thought it was worth a shot anyway. The kids and I were hand building some clay LAST YEAR in August and I roughly fashioned a tatting shuttle.

Fast forward a month till I fired it to bisque and then fast forward a year and a few months till I got around to glazing it and re-firing it. Since I didn't expect it to work I didn't do a particularly careful job of finishing and smooth it. I was more concerned about placement of the tips because that is important in tatting and when you glaze it, that's really important in it not fusing together.

It all came out so well! The tip tension is perfect and it makes the most adorable "tink tink" sound when I wind the thread on and off it. It holds a lot of thread and is very comfortable to tat with.

It is A LOT of work and I was lucky to have it come out so well on my first try. I am so thrilled with it though. I'm kinda  itchy to try it again. :)

Skull

We really like the fun of Halloween around here. I am pretty sure it is my 4 year old's favorite holiday. His favorite story is the Legend of Sleepy Hollow after all. So adding another Halloween design just seemed the thing to do.

 I made a few different designs of skulls and the preference was not unanimous so I listed them all on etsy. Kept one for myself and made a Halloween brooch.

Witch hat

My third grader couldn't wear her costume to school... in theory. I can totally see how a large witch hat would be a problem but since all the rest of her costume was dress code approved I made her a little witch hat hair clip. Complete with a Tatted flower to match her large hat. One happy Mom and one happy witch. Her pirate brother could wear costumes to his school.

Ice Cream Double Scoop

The Ice Cream cone is making a come back.
Originally designed

Recently a request was made for a double scoop ice cream cone. The prototype tatted up perfectly but results couldn't be duplicated so a few changes were made to the pattern and this happy little double scoop cone is available.  I'm going to say a triple scoop is possible too but it might be a little top heavy for that waffle cone! :)

Tatties Birthday Give Away (belated)

Oh dear me! A birthday has come and gone. Actually two!
We celebrated my daughter's and I put a mental note down to make sure I celebrated Tatties' birthday as well and then we got lost in life. However, it would be a shame not to have a give away this year in honor of Tatties' 3rd year.

My daughter awaiting the cake cutting. She called her #3 tattie "rainbows." I love it. She sees me making Tatties and says, "I want my pretties." With all the hair she now has I have made her Tattie hair clips but they just don't get the love a regular Tattie does from her.

Oh so see how easily I loose track of my mind? Anyway, that mental note got lost till I was setting the crystals on Tatties the other day...
